Review of the Year 2010 from the Mad Cornish Projectionist

At this time of the year most people will be reviewing theirs, myself included. It's been a very good year for me personally and a rather interesting on for the cinema industry as well. Below I try to look back at the news stories which I have seen and highlighted through the News Headlines on the Mad Cornish Projectionist website and try to summarise them.

Without question 2010 was really the year when both 3D and digital cinema were experienced by more of the audience than ever before, helped on by Avatar. The number of news stories about cinemas committing to one supplier or another to provide there Digital Cinema equipment were countless and continuous. This was helped with the various Hollywood studios signing up to Virtual Print Fees. Technicolor were demonstrating their new 3D system for film projectors, while Sony’s 4K DLP projector sent waves through the industry, causing Texas Instruments to release their 4K chips for Barco, NEC and Christie. And 4K was a big discussion this year, helped on of course by the work I was commissioned to do for Barco and the release of their 4K projectors. However, Kodak also demonstrated a new laser projector in the summer that they had been working on. And of course 3D glasses are becoming a fashion accessory which will become more wider marketed in 2011. It was also ten years since the first digital cinema trials were taking place in Leicester Square.

Stories in the industry also indicates that more conversions would have taken place if the equipment was available. It was interesting to talk to projectionists of multiplexes who in 2009 only had maybe one projector now having 50% digital and expecting to be completely digital at some point in 2011.

Of course the other side of that story is that it became clear in 2010 that projectionists were really going to go the way of the lighthouse-keeper and Cornish tin miner. I think it is very unlikely that there will anywhere near the same number of projectionists in existence by the end of 2011 as there were in 2010. In fact today while I was looking at material on Google there were a number of different articles relating to the demise of the projectionist. I have also seen very few projectionists jobs even being advertised this year. On a regular basis I would be asked by people how to become a projectionist, and I would given them the information, but from the middle of this year that changed and I now tell them that there is no chance that they will ever become one.

However the number of alternative content stories increased for the first time this year along with delivery via satellite of this content and that of some films. It is easy to see that this will be the news story that we will see more and more stories about.

The cinema buildings themselves were also a large part of the stories for the year. The number of former cinemas that were being campaigned to be saved seemed to be high, but there were some good stories - like the cinema at St Albans which managed to raise the money to buy the building and is now big renovated. I think that we will see more these stories too in 2011.

The news that the Government was shutting down the UK Film Council created a number of column inches as people argued why it was either right or wrong that the body that represented Film in the UK should go. In the end it is going and most of it’s powers will be handled by the BFI. These changes will give rise to new stories over the next year to follow.

But there was some good news as Warner Brothers announced that they will building a new film studios at Leavesden Studios.

Not surprisingly there were also mergers, takeovers, and closers from with in the understory. The main on in the UK was Vue being sold, although there were also says of cinema chains in other parts of the world including the US. And then there was the announcement that Technicolor were closing one of their labs, something that I’m sure we are going to see more of in 2011/2012.

Just before the end of the year with the sale of Vue, rumours started to sound about a possible sale of Odeon cinemas as well. It is quite possible that this is likely to happen in 2011. I think it is safe to say that 2011 will see more of the same as in 2010, perhaps at an accelerated rate.I think there are going to be some challenges for all of us in the industry.

If you would like to see all the news stories I put up online, then you can see them here: http://www.madcornishprojectionist.co.uk/news2010.php and also the news as distributed via Google Reader: http://www.madcornishprojectionist.co.uk/news_crawler.php.

GOLDEN AGE OF CINEMA CELEBRATED AT BLETCHLEY PARK

The heyday of 1940’s British cinema will be celebrated in style at Bletchley Park on Sunday 3 October, with the help of the Projected Picture Trust and Vagabond Cinema. With a range of activities for the whole family, the event will re-create two classic cinema experiences, including an evening screening of the iconic war-time film, Casablanca and demonstrate how film and cinemas have changed since the 1940s.

The classic 1940’s film show, Saturday morning Minors, will be re-created for the kids in Hut 12, while more grown-up documentaries from the 1940s through to the 1960s will be shown throughout the day in the Enigma Cinema. Visitors can learn about the workings of war-time projectors and see how film reels were changed while the film was running. There will be a display of film and camera equipment in the Mansion, including a working scaled-down model of a cinema. Visitors are also invited to bring in old film they may have, which will be run on the equipment for them to view.

The highlight of the event is a special screening of Casablanca during the evening in the lovely surroundings of the Mansion Ballroom. Helping to create the right atmosphere, the evening’s main feature film event will start at 7pm, with old newsreel and a B film, followed by an interval before the screening of the main feature film.

Entry to the daytime event is covered by the normal Bletchley Park ticket of £10 (see below for full details). Entry to the evening screening of Casablanca is £10 (adult), £8 concession, a complimentary ice-cream is included in your ticket price generously donated by Zest caterers, other refreshments will also be available. For bookings, visit the website at www.bletchleypark.org.uk.

Empire Cinemas selects Arqiva's Digital Cinema Satellite System

Empire Cinemas to use Arqiva’s Digital Cinema Satellite System

Empire Cinemas has chosen to deploy Arqiva’s Digital Cinema Satellite Distribution System for their entire cinema circuit. This will enable all of Empire’s 16 UK sites to electronically receive Digital Cinema Packages and live events distributed by Arqiva.

Barrie Woolston, Commercial Director at Arqiva Satellite & Media, said, “We believe that satellite based electronic delivery is the future of cinema distribution as it provides cost effective, secure and simultaneous distribution of film content to multiple sites. It also enables the distribution of live alternative content which we see as a major growth area and an exciting commercial opportunity for exhibitors. Arqiva’s innovative satellite system, based on its IS905 platform, uses professional broadcast equipment to provide a robust and reliable electronic delivery system for both live and feature content. Empire’s decision to deploy this across their entire cinema chain is a resounding vote of confidence in both electronic delivery and Arqiva’s Digital Cinema Satellite System.”

Justin Ribbons, CEO of Empire Cinemas, added: “We are committed to ensuring that our cinemas stay at the cutting edge of all cinema technology. In this regard the delivery of content by satellite to Empire’s growing network of digital cinemas is increasingly important. We believe that the quality and professionalism demonstrated by Arqiva make them an ideal technology partner for the Empire group.”

Arqiva provides robust satellite and IP networks for the managed delivery of entertainment, information and advertising worldwide. It works with leading media distributors to provide electronic delivery services of live events and feature films into digital cinemas across Europe.

The Big Picture - In the past the goal of exhibitors was efficient turnover. They wanted to get patrons in the front door, sell them concessions in the lobby, move them into the theatre and when the movie ended funnel them out as quickly as possible to expedite more screenings per day. Today, in part thanks to digital cinema technology, movie theatres are evolving into community centers.

Gala Screening for Care International - 17th October

A rare opportunity to see Hitchcock's seminal classic on one of the biggest and best screens in the UK, Empire Leicester Square. Released in 1960, Psycho changed cinema forever, pushing the boundaries of screen horror and providing some of the best-known scenes in all movies. Bernard Herrmann's visceral score is simply one of the greatest film scores ever created.

A larcenous Phoenix real–estate secretary Marion Crane (Leigh) picks the wrong place to spend a night: The bates Motel (12 cabins, 12 vacancies, 12 showers), run by a peculiar young man (Perkins) and his crotchety old ‘mother‘. Based on Robert Bloch‘s novel, the film‘s numerous set pieces remain unsurpassed (the superbly edited shower sequence, storyboarded by Saul Bass is one of the most influential in film history), with the film having accrued the reputation as the master of all suspense movies.

This screening forms part of David Arnold's Concert for CARE, a major event at the Royal Albert Hall on October 18th featuring some of the biggest names in film music. Many of the composers, including David Arnold, John Ottman, Harry Gregson-Williams, John Powell, George Fenton, Rachel Portman and Dario Marianelli will also attend the Psycho screening and will take part in an exclusive Q&A on film scoring following the Psycho screening.

Film Council axemen could murder an industry - It was nothing short of a hammer blow. This morning, word came through of John Woodward's email to UK Film Council staff informing them that the government was planning to shut them down. Then the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) confirmed it in a written statement at lunchtime. I was genuinely shocked. It felt like I'd nipped out for 10 minutes to get a pie and while I was out they closed the British film industry.

Cinema Tax

The Cinema Tax was introduced by the Government into the UK in 1916. When it was first introduced the tax represented a high proportion of the ticket price, especially for the cheaper seats, so after protests by the industry a reduction of the flat rate was introduced in 1920 - on a 4½d ticket, the tax was 2d. This was a very profitable for the Treasury who in 1945 received £41m of the £115m gross box office revenues, this represented 93% of total tax receitpts from entertainment at the end of the war.

Not surprisingly the cinema industry weren't happy and in 1949, J Arthur Rank, one of the most powerful figures in the UK film industry announced that production would be cut and cease altogether after June 1950 unless the tax was reduced. The tax was finally abolished in 1960 having been replaced by the Eady Levy in 1957 as part of the Cinematograph Film Act of 1957.

The Eady Levy was introduced by Sir Wilfred Eady in 1957 as a way of supporting the British film industry in the UK and ran through until 1985. It had the effect of both assisting the film industry, and reducing the effect of Entertainment Tax on film exhibition, to which all the cinema industry was opposed. In 1984 the Govenment realised that the levy was no longer supporting the film producers as much of the money was going directly to distributors.

More to follow St Albans?

The residents of St Albans can look forward to getting a new old cinema thanks to all their hard work of raising £1 million in little over two months. This is an amazing achievement, especially in a recession, and in such a short period of time and without lottery money.

There were two main things which helped the success of St Albans. The first was the publicity machine, without question there seemed to be a story about St Albans and the Odeon campaign if not daily, then several times a week in the local newspapers. A selection of these news stories can be found here: http://ping.fm/zlokL This constant campaigning along with a real deadline for it to be raised by has helped the money to be raised so quickly

The second really helpful thing that this campaign did was to have lots of different ways for people to get involved. It didn't matter how much money you had you could show your support for the enterprise in a very practice way. From buying shares to providing loans to just making a simple donation it meant that everyone could be involved (http://ping.fm/VefFf).

St Albans isn't unique in wanting to reopen it's former cinema and run itself, throughout the UK there are campaigns going on all the time, but it's the speed and the lack of major lottery or related grants, which makes this campaign stand out.

Of course this is only the start of the process as now £2 million needs to be raised to refit the building and make any repairs needed.

So the question is really, is this the start of something different? Are we going to see this repeated in other parts of the country? I would suggest that it is and should be. It wasn't just the sum or the speed which raised the money, but the passion The local community of St Albans is passionate about the project - they want it to happen. Of course there is a good management team with James Hannaway CEO of the Rex Cinema (http://ping.fm/lodTq) being on board, but their is no reason why it shouldn't be repeated again and again across the country. It just takes a lot of energy and passion.

* I write this article as an observer of the success of the St Albans project, rather than being directly involved, so this is very much my impression of the story. The website with the latest information on the project can be found here: http://ping.fm/DORkB
