David Puttnams Century of Cinema - BBC Radio 2 Series- In the closing days of 1999, British film producer David Puttnam, with broadcaster and author Brian Sibley, presented a major series for Radio 2 to mark the first one hundred years of popular film. Moreover, the film is an event that just might change the way the industry looks at 3D in the near term. British Cinemas Set To Break £1B Again - So say distributors and exhibitors, who are confident that 2010’s box office will match last year’s £1 billion total. Last year’s £1,054,351,651 box office total was accompanied by a rise in ticket sales. There were 170 million tickets sold for UK cinemas in 2009 – the best year since 2004’s record-breaking 176 million tickets sold. According to Nielsen EDI, 2009’s box office total was 11% higher than the final tally for 2008. While no single film could compete with the £69 million grossed by Mamma Mia!, Warner Bros’ Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the top performer. It grossed more than £50.7 million. Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs was in second place at £35 million. Disney’s Up took third with £34.3 million.

Today, the company announced that they have been selected to install DP-2000 projectors for Cinema West in their new Palladio 16 Cinemas site. The projectors will all be equipped with 3D capabilities in order to play RealD 3D movies. The DP-200 also features a 2K HD (2048 x 1080) resolution and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. “We’re honored to have been selected by Cinema West for their new installation, which is noteworthy on many levels,” explained Terri Westhafer, Director of Business Development for Barco Digital Cinema. “Not only are we part of the largest 3D installation in California, but we also play a part in the company’s high regard for ‘green’ energy use. Digital Cinemas First Decade - The case could be made that digital cinema has been around much longer than just the past ten years. For example, I wrote an article for Variety in 1990 about electronic cinema’s potential to transform the movie industry. The consensus at that time was that any serious implementation was a decade away. However, cut to May 1999. That was when Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace opened with a handful of digital screenings in movie theatres in and around New York and Los Angeles. Admittedly major developments were decidedly slow for many years after that, but that movie gave the idea of digital cinema serious momentum and the transformation had begun: digital cinema’s first decade was underway.
