A year for the record books - It is most fitting that the film that helped propel the industry to a record-breaking 2009 is also one of the most talked-about movies in recent memory. James Cameron’s Avatar certainly did not disappoint fans and is truly a major entertainment vehicle for the masses. Moreover, the film is an event that just might change the way the industry looks at 3D in the near term. British Cinemas Set To Break £1B Again - So say distributors and exhibitors, who are confident that 2010’s box office will match last year’s £1 billion total. Last year’s £1,054,351,651 box office total was accompanied by a rise in ticket sales. There were 170 million tickets sold for UK cinemas in 2009 – the best year since 2004’s record-breaking 176 million tickets sold. According to Nielsen EDI, 2009’s box office total was 11% higher than the final tally for 2008. While no single film could compete with the £69 million grossed by Mamma Mia!, Warner Bros’ Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the top performer. It grossed more than £50.7 million. Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs was in second place at £35 million. Disney’s Up took third with £34.3 million.

The Independent Spirit - If digital cinema is going to fulfill its promise of truly bringing about a new era of movie making and exhibition, then the independent theatres that are an important part of the cultural lifeblood of small towns around the world can not be left behind. Fortunately the independent spirit that has kept these theatres alive through many difficult times is still evident in many communities and there are signs that a significant number of them are taking part in the digital transition. Cinema Centers in the rural mountains of central Pennsylvania is a good example.

Who Do You Trust? - Who do you trust is the most fundamental issue of security. Digital cinema was originally devised so that studios could conduct business with exhibitors without concern for theft of content in its pristine, digital form. As the number of digital cinema installations grows, the management of security keys becomes increasingly difficult to perform and the entities that supply security keys struggle to keep up with new installations.
