The Latest Cinema and Exhibition Industry News for March

Dear All,

Please find the news headlines below for the last couple of weeks,
available at:

BKSTS CTC Projectionists Day Out, Newport

Venue: Clarence Place, Newport, Gwent, Wales, United Kingdom NP19 7AB
Time: 11:00am
Price: £7.50
Date: Saturday May 22nd

Enjoy the chance to look around the burgeoning new cinema museum, before
it officially opens, where you will be able to get ‘hands-on’ with a wide
range of classic cinema equipment and to talk with friends and colleagues
on a completely relaxed trip to South Wales. Come along and get involved!

Additional Info:
It is not often that those in the projection business can get together for
long enough to talk about the business, to catch up on what is happening
to old friends, and to generally ‘chew the fat’ about how things used to
be and whether or not they will be getting better, so for some time the
Cinema Technology Committee has been thinking about how to organise a day
out that would appeal to as many people as possible. An article to be
published shortly in Cinema Technology about Chris Plaister’s efforts with
a team of volunteers at the old Odeon in Newport raised the suggestion,
that Chris readily agreed to, that the Odeon Newport, packed as it is with
a wide range of classic cinema equipment and memorabilia, would be an
ideal venue for such a get-together. We have therefore arranged that Chris
and his team will make the place open to Cinema Technology readers and
friends from 1100 to 4pm on Saturday May 22nd. Attendees will be able to
wander round at will and examine and touch many of the old projectors and
the vast range of other cinema and TV equipment that has been assembled as
the core of a potential cinema museum. The intention is for this to be a
‘fun day’ and certainly not a formal training course, but having all that
equipment available, some of it working, will also give us the chance to
put on some ‘educational’ events. For those who have attended our
Projectionists’ Training courses this year it will also be a unique chance
to get involved with ‘hands-on’ experience of some of the important topics
that our lecturers covered during those courses and to see the recommended
methods put into practice.

Alice in Wonderland’ Sets Stage for Dolby Showdown With RealD - March 12
(Bloomberg) — “Alice in Wonderland,” Tim Burton’s reimagining of the Lewis
Carroll tale, is doing more than setting box-office records for a 3-D
movie. It’s serving as a showdown between two rival projector
technologies. On one side is the dominant format from RealD, a company in
Beverly Hills, California. On the other: San Francisco’s Dolby
Laboratories Inc., which rules the market for audio technology but remains
an upstart in 3-D video.

Welsh film history: 1920-29 - The 1920's were the peak and, ironically,
the swansong years of silent cinema - which reached its zenith with the
cinematic masterpieces of directors such as von Sternberg, von Stroheim,
Murnau, Eisenstein and Gance, and in Hollywood the still incomparable
comedies of Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd.

Off The Screen - 3D Cinema - A few years ago, Jeffrey Katzenberg (for the
few that still may not know who he is, he is the co-founder of DREAMWORKS,
SKG and CEO of DREAMWORKS ANIMATION) made a bold proclamation that 3-D
would save the movie industry. Was he right? Mr. Katzenberg knows a thing
or two about cinematic success like when he was the head of Disney feature
films and he was responsible for revitalizing their feature animated film
division which included hits like THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE
BEAST, ALADDIN and THE LION KING. Not to mention that recent box office
returns would suggest that yes, he indeed was correct.

The return of 35mm 3D: Two competing processes add a new dimension to
stereoscopic race - One of the most important but baffling aspects of the
cinema technology market is that innovation can come from anywhere, from
any direction, or any point in time. Ideas are presented, systems
developed, and equipment installed, all competing to better satisfy the
filmmaker?s desire to create new and better experiences for moviegoers.
Such is the case with 3D systems, where there is a competitive market for
digital 3D vendors. To add to the mix, there have been recent
announcements of two competitive 35mm film 3D systems: Technicolor 3D,
from one of cinema?s best-known brands, and Oculus3D?, a recent newcomer
